No you are not actually forced to marry someone you love

The last weeks of working as an au pair went by as most other days. I took the big kids to swim class which has been their main activity this semester. One day before swim class Amanda counted all of the boys and girls in the family and counted me in as well which of course made me happy. It's a difficult balance as an au pair to try and be part of the family and at the same time professional. We always had a long time to just hang out in the car before swimming so we had lots of conversations. This time Amanda talked about how it is better to have a job that you enjoy instead of earning a lot of money (love it). But when we started talking about marriages she was shocked to hear that my parents didn't get married until after me and my sister were born. She had no idea you could do that! I told her that some people never even get married at all. "You mean that you could just live together with someone?" she asked ;) A whooole new world opened up for her, haha. 14% of the Swedish population are couples who live together without being married. The other percent are everyone else, including the married ones. It's much more common to get married in America for various reasons and I do miss the option of getting to choose yourself whether or not you want to perticipate in a religious ceremony just to get the same rights as any other couple who wants to live together forever. But since I will be an immigrant me and Nick have decided that this is the best option for us personally.

Speaking of being engaged and getting married - both me and Nick managed to lose our engagement rings for a while xD Nick came home from work one night thinking the ring must have fallen off his hand when he took of his gloves, because it was just gone. Luckily it showed up in our room the next day! Just a few hours later that day I lost mine!! Thank goodness I found it a four days later, it had fallen off my night stand and into a bag, haha.

That same week I baked 99 chocolate gingerbread cookies since my last au pair meeting would be a cookie exchange party. I gave some to my host family, Nick's family and brought the rest with me to the meeting. It was bittersweet of course because it was me and a couple of other girls who were leaving. But in general I didn't love going to the meetings at the end since I had other things going for me. Although I did appreciate the letter that my LCC gave me to read afterwards. It was very sweet!

Someone got slightly bored waiting for swim class to start :P haha, I used to do this as a kid too
The host family's Christmas tree had been put up one day when I came to work
Me and Amanda walked downtown to check out the tree lightning in downtown Mountain View.
The boys were already there watching the choir sing Christmas carrols
They got to buy these glowing stick things and Amanda chose one with a snowflake. After spending oly 15 minutes there she said she wanted to go home :P
To teach Nick Swedish I gotta be creative sometimes ;)
Ready to go to work but not particulary happy about it. Another 12-15 hour shift coming up ;)
Cutest little chocolate snow man
Cookie exchange party
My LCC always has such a warm and inviting atmosphere in her house
Back home with Reesie bear
One day Amanda asked me why I have the Brazilian flag on my bag... hahaha what?? xD
