A day in the life
Today was a busy but typical day in my life and I like doing little updates where I describe what it means to be an au pair, so that future au pairs might get some insight. So here is what my day looked like! :)
10:00 am - Woke up at Nick's house, grabbed my bags and drove home. It usually takes 25 min but today traffic was slow because of an accident. There was a person laying on the ground that a group of firerfighters were helping.
10:45 - 11:30 am - Got dressed, brushed my teeth and got ready for work. In the mornings I sometimes eat a banana for breakfast which usually gives me energy that lasts long.
11:30-12:30 pm - My host mom e-mailed me a list of things she needed me to do today. What she needs help with has changed a lot since I started working for this family but nowadays I always start off by cleaning the kitchen. Doing the dishes, whiping the tables, sweeping the floor and vaccuming the playroom. Then I folded laundry and rags.
12:30-1:30 pm - After having a very quick lunch I dropped off packages at the post office and went from there to pick up Daniel from school. On my way there the craziest thing happened at one of the big crossroads. A person who was going to make a left turnn thought they had a green light when they didn't so they ended up almost crashing wih several cars coming from the other direction! I thought I would be late to school but Daniel ended school in 20 min and I got there in 15 min ;) Yeah, I'm pretty awesome, haha! He was so happy today since they had celebrated his birthday :)
1:30 pm - Dropped Daniel off at grandparents house. Went back home to make waffles, which I do about once a week. Got that recipe memorized by now. I took out the recycling and compost. And then ironed the napkins since I didn't have time for that in the morning.
2:30 pm - Went to the bagel store to get a chocolate chip bagel for Amanda (and one for me, since that is a good snack to have during the afternoons when I'm out and about and don't have time to cook food). I went to the library real quick to drop off some books.
3:10 pm - Picked up Amanda from school and took her to swim class. She spent half an hour telling me the names of 25 different kinds of birds, lol.
5:00-6:30 pm - Ran around in the house making dinner, doing dishes, emptying the dishwasher, making lunches for tomorrow. All while keeping an eye on the boys while my host mom was busy sewing Daniel's halloween costume and dealing with Amanda's temper tantrum which seemed to be neverending!
7:00 pm - I had a one hour long belly dancing class since I still have some credits left to earn before completing the au pair program!
8:00 pm - After that I drove to the gym to get some exercise. I managed to do 150 on the leg press today! Usually when I have a class after work I don't go to the gym since it's already late at night. But since I'm not going to Nick's house tonight I wanted to stay busy and forget that I am missing him like crazy ;)
9:00 pm - Took an awesome shower after that VERY hot day! (106 Fahrenheit - 41 Celsius)...
Now I'm just sitting in my bed in a very quiet room. It's always so quiet here. I used to enjoy that but now I'm used to Nick's TV, all of his cats, loud music playing and the air conditioner that is desperately working on cooling down that room. But one day per week I stay the night in Mountain View because it's good to miss each other and I want Nick to be able to have friends over without having to worry about me getting up to work early the nex day. The only thing that sucks about it is that I have no one to hang out with here anymore, but I simply bite the bullet and stay busy in any other way that I can.
Played hide and seek with this little dude today. The hiding places he chooses always cracks me up :P
